Responsibilities of the Department of Planning & Building Services
The Department of Planning & Building Services provides staff support to the Town Council, Planning Commission, Design Review Board, General Plan Advisory Board, Affordable Housing Committee and the Tree Committee - related to the implementation of planning and land use policies and regulations in Fairfax. This department also provides information to the public via the public counter, telephone, email and/or mail four days a week. In addition:
- The Planning Division processes applications and issues permits, provides professional advice, enforces Town ordinances that govern the development and use of property, oversees the preparation, updating and/or amendment of the General Plan, Zoning Ordinances, subdivisions and environmental review.
- The Building Division provides plan review, issues building permits for construction activity, conducts inspections and implements code enforcement related to local ordinances, the California Building Code which includes accessibility requirements per the American’s with Disability Act, as well as the California Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing Codes.

Office Hours
Planning and building staff are available at the public counter at Town Hall at 142 Bolinas Road. Town Hall is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am – 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm and is closed to the public on Fridays.
